Our client dreamed of turning his Craftsman house on the Main Line of Philadelphia into a chalet-like dwelling. Provenance’s inventory of reclaimed wood was an integral part of bringing that vision to life. With extensive renovations, the house almost doubled in size, giving the young family plenty of inviting spaces to gather in.

The client was drawn to the soft grey tones of redwood and used variations of the material on a number of surfaces. Barn doors clad in siding contrast with crisp white marble in the bathroom. Narrow strips cover many of the walls; a generous space was placed between the boards for a strong visual effect. Because entertaining is a priority for the family, a well-stocked bar covered in redwood serves as the basement’s centerpiece.

Oak timbers were perhaps the most integral part of the transformation. To set the tone for the home, rugged beams form a truss system on the facade that are reminiscent of ski lodge. The client opened the second story of the entryway and added a vaulted ceiling with beams soaring overhead. To carry out the theme, the lumber was also turned into mantles and shelving.

To allow the prominent texture of the beams to shine, the client opted for understated live sawn white oak flooring throughout the house. Matching oak treads were also used on staircases that lead to the basement and second floor.

Incorporating rustic materials into an existing structure gave the space a new look that’s undoubtedly stylish and cozy.
