Rich textures of reclaimed materials mingle with vibrant hues. The unexpected combination adds an element of surprise to the sprawling estate located in rural New Jersey.
Architect Richard Stokes chose Provenance’s reclaimed wood and marble to provide a backdrop to the eye-popping colors and patterns in the New Jersey home. Provenance’s expert milling and material selection give the illusion that they’ve been part of the house for centuries.
Because the family places an emphasis on entertaining, particular care was given to the kitchen and dining room. For a poignant touch, Provenance felled a black walnut tree from the family’s 500-acre estate which was then cut, dried, and milled. Provenance used the wood to fabricate a kitchen island, as well as built-ins and desks. The re-milled early 19th-century pumpkin pine flooring that spans the dining room is as noteworthy as the oversized florals that bloom on the wallpaper and rugs.
Marble from Independence Mall was paired with a vintage cabinet for an elegantly eclectic wet bar and paneling made of brown board from rustic Pennsylvania-area structures clads the study walls. Provenance also transformed chestnut church pews and pre-Civil War white pine into flooring for a large portion of the home. Detailed attention was given to the sprawling courtyards where pheasants roam; brick pavers and that once lined the streets of Philadelphia were laid into a herringbone pattern that bisects the terrace.
