It’s easy to picture shop clerks chit-chatting with folks and counting out change at our Alexander counter. It stretches more than 10 feet long this and has thirteen cubbies on the reverse side. Best of all? The tiny compartment, which slides open to reveal a bell that ensured speedy customer service.
Provenance acquired this vintage piece from Meeker’s Hardware, a family-owned shop in Danbury Connecticut. Located in a Classic Revival building just outside the city’s Main Street Historic District, it was known for its impressive inventory of tools, gardening supplies, and feed. The store opened in 1885 and was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
